In 2009 Mavis was diagnosed with usually fatal asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma. It was washing her husband’s asbestos-covered clothes led to Mavis Nye contracting mesothelioma. Ray Nye worked in the Royal Naval dockyard in Chatham and the couple had no idea about the damage that was being caused to Mavis’s health by doing such a simple household chore. The Mavis Nye Foundation was created to inspire victims of mesothelioma, an asbestos related terminal cancer. Mavis has gained a reputation for support and advice and her work is internationally recognised. She was awarded a BCA for her work, is an NHS patient rep and sits on various committees and support groups .
